Sambalpur: The death toll in fire in Safal Gutkha factory near Pardhiapali at the
outskirts of Sambalpur town, rose to two on Thursday
The deceased, a worker of the factory, breathed their last in the IGH Rourkela after ten days
of treatment. Earlier one worker had succumbed to the burn injuries in the fire.
At least 25 persons were injured when fire occurred in the packaging machine and then spread
to other areas causing massive damages to the unit on December 20 last.
The factory, Sambalpur District BJP Presiden Girish Patel alleged that it had violated all rules
and regulations and has not obtained the no objection certificate from fire, factory and boilers
BJP activists Benudhar Dash and Manas Ranjan Baksi alleged that the management,violating
labour acts had appointed 500 labourers from Uttar Pradesh whose antecedents are not known.
Since the deceased labourers belong to poor families, the management should pay Rs. 20 lakh
as compensation to the next kin of the two deceased workers.
The BJP has demanded arrest of the owner and manager for running the factory for violating
safety norms and Labour Act.
