Covid 19: Odisha witnessing a spike of over 10 K to 12 K daily covid cases amidst lockdown, weekend shut down

Bhubaneswar : Notwithstanding the first and second phase lockdown and weekend shut down, the daily covid positive cases in Odisha have been witnessing a spike of over 10,000 to 12,000.

Ever since the state government imposed a lockdown on May 5 to May 19 which was further extended to June 1 next besides the weekend shut down, the state has reported 2,01.292 covid positive cases and 349 deaths during the last 19 days.

However, during the period 1,60,381 covid patients have been recovered while the active cases in the state continued to remain above one lakh mark for the eighth consecutive day today.

An analysis of covid positive cases during the lockdown revealed that from May 5 till date, Odisha has reported daily covid positive cases of over 11,000 for the seventh time. On May 6 and May 12 the daily caseload, however, surpassed the 12,000 marks.

Health and Family Welfare department sources said in the past 24 hours 11,498 new covid cases were detected from 30 districts in the state which included 6439 from the quarantine centres and 5059 local contact cases.

In the past 24 hours, a record 25 people succumbed to the virus taking the total covid fatalities in the state to 2403. The covid tally in the state has surged to 6,55,899 of which 5,46,631 have already been cured. The active case which continued to be over one lakh since May 12, stood at 1,06,812 today.

Khordha district has reported the highest number of 1497 new cases in the past 24 hours followed by Cuttack ( 1107), Angul ( 867), Sundargarh(703), Mayurbhanj ( 538) and Balasore (524).

Barring Gajapati district which registered 86 new cases, all the rest 29 districts in the state reported over 100 positive cases Out of 25 fresh deaths reported in the state, four each died in Khordha and Kalahandi, three in Angul, two each in Ganjam, Rayagada and Sundargarh district while one each died in eight other districts.

The state government has stopped the drive in vaccination launched by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation(BMC) and doorstep vaccination programme for senior citizens introduced by the Berhampur Municipal Corporation(Be MC) and Cuttack Municipal Corporation( CMC).

Additional Chief Secretary ( Health ) PK Moghpatra has asked the Ganjam Collector and the Commissioner of BMC and CMC to stop the programme and concentrate on the sessions at vaccination centres.

He said the covid operational guidelines of the Union Health ministry do not permit such vaccination programmes.

Meanwhile, the Odisha high court and its offices were completely shut down for a week from today till May 27 in view of an unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases in Odisha and the rising Covid positive cases amongst the Staff of the High Court.

The court will resume functioning on May 28. However during the shutdown period, only extremely urgent matters may be mentioned before the Registrar (Judicial) through email ohc.mentionmemos@gmail.com between 11 am to 12 Noon, explaining the extreme urgency, a release from the high court said.
