Covid fatalities surpass 8000 mark in Odisha, 719 new cases surface in past 24 hours

Bhubaneswar : The covid fatalities in Odisha today surpassed the 8000 marks with the reports of 53 more deaths in the past 24 hours while 719 new cases were recorded taking the total tally in the state to 10,08,469.

Health and Family Welfare department sources said 53 more people succumbed to the virus pushing the total fatalities in the state to 8022.

Out of the 53 cases recorded during the health audit, Khordha district registered the highest number of 19 deaths followed by six each in Jagatsinghpur and Keonjhar and five each in Cuttack and Puri districts.

Since August 8 last the state has been reporting over 60 covid fatalities daily which now declined to 53 after a gap of 23 days.

During the past 24 hours, 719 new infections were reported from the state which included 422 from the quarantine centres and 297 as local contact cases.

As high as 125 positive cases were reported in the age group of 1 to 18 years in the state and Khordha district alone recorded 259 cases followed by 89 in Cuttack.

These two districts contributed 48.4 per cent of the total new cases recorded in the state in the past 24 hours.

The active cases have further reduced to 7159 and a majority of the active cases are reported from coastal districts of Khordha and Cuttack contributing to nearly 50 per cent of the total active cases in the state.

As of today, Khordha district has 2728 active cases while 841 active cases were reported from the Cuttack district.

For the second day today the test positivity rate in the state remained 1.1 per cent as out of 64,656 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, 719 tested covid positive.

The test positivity rate in the state continued to remain less than 2 per cent since August 5 last. In the past 24 hours, however, 25 of the 30 districts in the state recorded a test positivity rate below one per cent.

An analysis of covid tally in the state indicated that out of 10,08,469 covid positive cases reported in the state so far, 5,53,862 cases, about 54 per cent were reported during the last five months from May to August.

Similarly, out of 8022 fatalities reported in the state, as high as 6705 ( 83 per cent) were recorded only in the last five months

In the recovery cases, 6,07,075 people (61.1 per cent) were recovered during the last five months from May to August.

Meanwhile, the state government, considering the drop in the daily covid load cases, lifted the weekend shut down imposed in the three cities of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri and further relaxed the night curfew timings from 10 PM to 5 AM only in all urban areas in the state.

The government allowed the Cinema halls and Auditoriums to run with their full seating capacity following the covid guidelines, appropriate behaviour and maintaining the social distance.

The shops and business establishments were also allowed to open

from 5 AM to 10 PM every day across the state and raised the limit of participation of guests in marriages, death rituals and sacred ceremonies to a maximum ceiling of 250 people.
