Puri: The Jagannath temple in Odisha’s Puri will remain closed for devotees from January 10 to January 31 to contain the spread of the Covid pandemic, the authorities announced on Friday.
The decision to close the temple was taken at an emergency meeting of Chhatisha nijog, the apex body of the servitors, here.
The rituals will, however, be continued as per schedule by the servitors, Puri Collector Samarth Verma told media persons soon after the meeting.
Verma said since Covid cases are on the rise in the district, more particularly in the municipal limits, and a number of servitors and temple officials have been infected by the virus, a meeting of Chhatisha nijog was held through Video conferencing to discuss the situation.
The Servitors and officials expressed concern and unanimously passed the resolution to close the temple for the devotees, Verma said.
The meeting was presided over by the chief administrator of Srimandir.
The meeting followed the detection of three Omicron cases in a hotel and a steady rise in new Corona positive cases, Verma added.
It is worth mentioning that new cases of coronavirus from the district continued to be in single digits for about six weeks and even some days it was nil but suddenly new cases were reported and within three days the tally jumped from 30 on Wednesday to 54 on Friday.
