Police foil self-immolation bid of a woman, her son before Odisha Education minister’s residence

Bhubaneswar : The Commissionerate of Police today foiled an attempt of a woman and her son to immolate themselves outside the residence of the School and Mass Education Minister Sameer Dash.

The mother and her son, however, were overpowered by security personnel deployed in front of the Minister’s official residence when they tried to open kerosene to immolate before the Minister’s residence.

Later they were taken to the Capital Police station for interrogation.

The woman alleged that they took the extreme step as the capital school authorities did not fill-up the form of her son for the offline Class X examination scheduled to be held from July 30 next.

She said they decided to take the extreme step as despite their repeated efforts they were not allowed to meet the Minister.

This year the annual High School Certificate examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education Odisha was not held due to the Covid pandemic.

The marks were awarded to students based on an alternative evaluation system suggested by an expert team constituted by the government.

The Government had clarified that any student not satisfied with the result could appear for the offline examination.
The woman said her son had passed the annual HSC examination but he was not satisfied with his marks and wanted to appear in the offline examination.

But due to the negligence of the school authorities her son could not fill-up the form and demanded action against the teachers.

Both the mother and the son had also demonstrated in front of the school yesterday.

But the school authorities said the student could not fill-up the form due to his negligence and also the negligence of the parents.

The School Headmaster said the father of the student inquired in detail about the procedure to fill up the form and said he would come to fill up the form but did not turn up.
