Paradip waiting for reduced price of Hilsa

Paradip: Hilsa fish, popularly known as ilishi in Odisha, one of the few fishes that is quite famous for its incredibly soft meat and oily texture. Hilsa, the queen of fish is much in demand at Paradip since a long time. During monsoon, this quality fish enters to sweet water of Mahanadi from the Bay of Bengal through the mouth for laying eggs. The people of Paradip keeps waiting for such a time to get the queen fish in a cheaper rate. However due to insufficient catch of fish presently the fish is being sold at the rate of Rs.1700-1800 per KG which is difficult to afford by common people. .The fish seller are also waiting for the price to subside so that they can export the fish to neighouring states and abroad. Since last couple of years the business was in lull due to
covid and poor economy. This years flood water and improvement of economy has made high expectation of people to buy the queen fish in a lower rate. Notably, Hilsa is a sensitive fish species. And its breedingm ground is mostly concentrated in the confluence of river and oceanic waters. After being bred in fresh water, the fish makes its way to sea water again by undertaking a return journey to confluence points. According to experts, that increase in the pollution level along the water bodies connected to the Mahanadi river system, erratic monsoon and deficient rainfall has resulted in the disappearance of the itinerant Hilsa.
