Bhubaneswar : The Covid +ve cases and fatalities in Odisha has surged to a record high of 12,523 covid positive and 27 deaths in the past 24 hours.
Health and Family Welfare department sources said 7012 new infection cases were reported from the quarantine centres and 5511 local contact cases from 30 districts in the past 24 hours pushing the covid tally in the state to 6,68,422.
For the first time, the state reported record fatalities of 27 deaths from 14 districts in the past 24 hours taking the total covid toll in the state to 2430.
The recovery in the state shut up to 5,56,438 with 9870 people recovering from the virus on Thursday.
The active cases continued to remain above the one lakh mark for the ninth consecutive day. The active caseload stands at 1,09,438 showing a rising trend for the last five days since May 15 last.
At least four districts in the state have active cases less than 1000 while the rest 26 districts have more than 1000 active cases.
An analysis of covid positive cases in May revealed that so far on three occasions, the daily tally has crossed 12,000 marks on May 6,13 and 20 while it surpassed 11,000 marks on five occasions and 10 K mark on seven occasions.
Official sources said in the past 24 hours Khordha district reported the highest number of 1482 cases followed by Cuttack ( 1084), Angul ( 930), Sundargarh ( 715), Mayurbhanj ( 546) and Balasore ( 510 ).
Similarly, out of 27 fatalities reported in the past 24 hours, four each have succumbed to the virus from Khordha and Koraput district, three each from Nuapada, Rayagada and Sundargarh district and two deaths reported from Kalahandi. One each died in eight other districts.
Meanwhile, in response to the direction of the Union health ministry, the Odisha government on Thursday notified mucormycosis, popularly known as Black Fungus as a notifiable disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897 in view of rising of black fungus cases among the covid 19 patients.
Odisha is the sixth state to declare mucormycosis as a notifiable disease. The government has already advised the district administrations the treatment protocol of the disease although there is no epidemic of mucormycosis in the state, Additional Chief Secretary (Health ) P K Mohapatra said.
