Odisha govt.signs MoU with SLF to prevent road accidents

Bhubaneswar : Odisha government today signed a MoU with Save LIFE Foundation (SLF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) working in road safety in India to prevent road accidents and save lives.

Joint Commissioner, Road Safety, Odisha State Transport Authority, Sanjay Biswal and founder & CEO, Save LIFE Foundation, Piyush Tewari signed the agreement in the presence of Transport Commissioner of Odisha Arun Bothra.

As per the agreement SLF will identify, recommend and assist with the treatment of up to 100 vulnerable spots in Odisha where maximum accidental death have taken place in last few years.

The MOU aims at reducing the road accident deaths on Odisha roads significantly in the next three years.

Speaking at the event, Mr Bothra said, “Road Safety is a very high priority area for us. We are working on various fronts to make our roads safer.”

The Foundation, he said has improved the situation in various states and hoped that with combined efforts it will bring good results in Odisha as well.

Mr.Bothra said once the remedial measures are suggested and implemented, we hope that fatalities will be reduced by around 30-50 percent.

SLF CEO Piyush Tewari said, ‘’our ‘Zero-Fatality Corridor’ model will help meet that commitment.”

The ‘Zero-Fatality Corridor’ model attempts at reducing the number of road accident deaths through a 360 degree intervention across engineering, emergency care, enforcement, and education.

SLF will also provide assistance with formation of a Technical Support Unit (TSU) for road safety in the office of the Transport Commissioner.

The team will closely work with the Lead Agency on Road Safety to reduce road crash fatalities in the State. They shall analyse the policy framework on road safety in the State and will recommend changes or modifications in the policy framework on road safety to ensure effective implementation.

Save Life Foundation sources said they will reduce road crash deaths in India by 50 per cent by 2030 and the vision is to save 1 million lives by 2027.

SLF claimed In 2016, it partnered with Maharashtra and automotive leader Mahindra & Mahindra to implement India’s first Zero Fatality Corner (ZFC ) on the 100 km Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
