Odisha Drivers’ Strike Today

Bhubaneswar: In view of allOdisha strike called by the Driver Ekata Mahamancha from Wednesday, the state government has directed the officials of all districts to put a contingency plan to prevent inconvenience to the public. Following the notice by the drivers’ association to the government about their indefinite strike, the Transport department informed them that their demands were under its active consideration. Minister of Commerce and Transport Tukuni Sahu also held a meeting with the members of the Mahamancha and requested them to call off the proposed strike in view of the Matriculation, Plus II and Polytechnic examinations in the state. According to sources, the Mahamancha was not satisfied with the results of the meeting and decided to go ahead with the strike. In view of this, Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena held a meeting with top officials including DGP, Home Secretary, Principal Secretary of Commerce and Transport department, Transport Commissioner, Director-OSEPA. Following the meeting, the government has directed collectors and SPs of al districts and RTOs, to draw up a contingency plan to avoid any inconvenience to public, especially the students appearing at the examinations. The district officials have also been directed to provide required support to other transport associations which are not joining the strike and are willing to operate their services. Any obstruction in this regard would be dealt with sternly by the law enforcing authorities, the government said.
