New Delhi : Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday felicitated Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Mirabai Chanu at the 51st Foundation Day celebration of the Bureau of Police Research and Development and hoped that she would win a gold medal for India next time.
Chanu was appointed as additional superintendent of police in her home state Manipur after her Olympic win. She was presented with a shawl and a memento.
“Meerabai is here, when I met her on stage, I wished her a bright future. When you got the medal everyone was proud of you,” Shah said in his address later.
‘When I heard you used to go for training by taking lifts from truck drivers, I realised how much needs to be done for players. Wish you for better performance in future. Don’t be satisfied with silver, get gold, the whole nation is waiting,” he said.
Chanu won a silver medal in the 49kg category weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympic. It was the first medal India won at Tokyo, where the country achieved its highest ever medal tally with seven medals.
