Hirakud Dam to Release Season’s 1st Floodwater on July 18

Bhubaneswar: Hirakud Reservoir will release the season’s first floodwater into Mahanadi river at around 11 am on July 18, informed the dam’s Chief Engineer today. Sources said there has been a substantial rise in the reservoir’s water level due to incessant rainfall in upper catchment area of Mahanadi river for the last couple of days. Hence, the dam authorities have decided to release the excess water. The water will be released through five sluice gates on July 18. Officials concerned have been requested to take necessary measures to ensure that riverbed downstream of Hirakud dam is cleared as part of safety measures. In the past three hours, the reservoir’s water level stood at 608.43 ft as against the optimum level of 630 ft. The inflow and outflow were 2,05, 347 cusec and 28,425 cusec, respectively.
The average inflow was 2,05, 347 cusecs whereas the outflow was 28,425 cusecs, including 23,880 cusecs from power channel and 273 cusecs from industries.
