Bhubaneswar, Apr 15 (UNI) By election to the Pipili Assembly seat in Odisha scheduled to be held on April 17 has been adjourned following the demise of Congress candidate Ajit Mangaraj.
Odisha Chief Electoral Officer Sushil Kumar Lohani told newsmen here today that the by-poll to the Pipili Assembly seat had been deferred on the basis of the report of the Returning Officer.
He said the Election Commission of India has been informed about the death of the Congress candidate who died at a Private hospital here on Wednesday infected with coronavirus.
The CEO said as per the Section 52 of the Representation of People’s Act 1951, if the candidate of a recognised National Party or State Party dies, the poll is adjourned..
Mr.Lohani said now the Election Commission of India will finalise a date for holding the By election to the Pipili Assembly seat.
He said the ECI will set a fresh date giving seven days to the Congress candidate to file nomination and a fresh election date would be notified accordingly.
