Eugene, July 24 (Dumanimail) After winning the silver medal at the World Athletics Championships, a jubilant ace Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Sunday said the conditions were not great for him at the venue, but he is happy to have won a medal for the country.
“The prevailing conditions were not conducive. The wind speed was too high, but I was confident of giving my best. At the end, I am satisfied with the result. I am happy I was able to win a medal for my country,” he said in a media interaction from Eugene.
This statement makes a lot of sense as Neeraj is known for throwing his best in the very first throw, but at Eugene his first throw was flagged off as a foul, and that was definitely due to the high wind speeds.
In fact out of the six throws of Neeraj, only three were legal. The fifth throw measuring a distance of 88.13 meters won him the silver medal. The first two legal throws measured distances of 82.39 and 86.37 meters respectively.
By achieving this feat, Neeraj became the second track and field Indian athlete to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships after Anju Bobby George.
ON the other hand, the gold medalist Anderson Peter was in great rhythm. He threw the javelin at a distance of 90.54 to bag the top honours.
Jakub Vadlejch finished third with a throw of 88.09m.
