Puri Rath Yatra Preparations Gather Pace: First-Tier Structure Mounted on Four Nahakas, 14 Nahakas to Be Raised Tomorrow

Puri: Preparations for the annual Rath Yatra are progressing steadily as construction work on the three chariots entered another crucial phase on Tuesday. Following the completion of the first-tier floor frame of all three chariots, artisans completed the numbering of various frame components and finished fitting the remaining yokes.
          In a significant development, the first-tier chhakathi (cross-beam framework) was mounted on the four nahakas of all three chariots. After the first-floor frame was opened, Maharana carpenters, assisted by Bhoi servitors, installed the structural framework that will support the next stage of construction.The first-tier structure includes four pillars connected to the chhakathi, which will eventually support 24 side panels (pakhudas), 16 cross-members, and 24 floor pillars around the four sides of each chariot. Preparatory work for these installations has already begun.
14 Nahakas to Be Raised on WednesdayThe next major milestone is scheduled for Wednesday, when the 14 nahakas of the three chariots will be raised.
       Following this, the remaining components of the first-tier platform will be assembled.Maharana servitors will be supplied with four-foot-long coconut-wood beams (khadi ora). After shaping and levelling the beams, they will be fitted onto the chariot framework with the assistance of Bhoi servitors. Once the binding and alignment work is completed, the side panels will be attached to the first-tier structure.
       Four-Nahaka Bracing Work CompletedUnder the supervision of Bhoi Sardar Ravi Bhoi, servitors completed the jhanka salakha bracing work on the four nahakas of the three chariots. The work involved securing and stabilising the four upright supports connected to the main axle framework, ensuring structural alignment for subsequent construction stages.Construction of Second-Tier Frame BeginsWork has also commenced on the middle or second-tier floor frame of the three chariots. The construction is being carried out by chief Maharana artisans along with their assistants and Bhoi servitors at the Rath Khala workshop.Sculptural and Decorative Work Underway
Rupakar servitors continued carving decorative motifs on eight natagodas of each chariot, including intricate Kandarpa figures. They also began engraving artistic designs on the four side panels of the chariots.
       Meanwhile, at the temporary blacksmith workshop near Dolabedi, Ojha Kamar servitors completed the manufacture of nails required for the first-tier flooring and chanak kanta fittings. Work on potal kanta and second-tier nails is currently underway.At Dolabedi, Pahi Maharana servitors are continuing to prepare wooden implements and ritual accessories required for the upcoming Anasara period and Rath Yatra ceremonies.With each passing day, the iconic chariots are taking shape, bringing the sacred festival of Rath Yatra a step closer and drawing growing anticipation among devotees and visitors alike.
