Srinagar : Two militants, including a member of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) hit squad responsible for civilian killings, were eliminated in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, police said.
Acting on specific information about the presence of militants, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF launched a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) at Khrew, Pampore in Pulwama in the wee hours of Friday, a police spokesperson said.
When the security forces were moving towards the area, militants hiding there opened fire at them with automatic weapons. Security forces retaliated leading to the encounter, he said, adding that two militants were killed in the gunfight.
The spokesperson said arms, ammunition and “incriminating material”were found from the slain militants.
According to the him, one of the militants was identified as Musaib Mustaq of Khrew. He was involved in the killing of Javid Ahmad Malik, a civilian, at Lurgam.
He said this was a hit squad of HM responsible for civilian killings in South Kashmir. The identity of second militant was being ascertained.
Meanwhile, additional security forces have been deployed in the adjoining areas to prevent any law and order problem.
