Bhubaneswar : Ragging free Campus Abhiyan ( RFCA ) , a voluntary organisation working to free the campus from ragging, on Sunday urged Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to order a Crime Branch inquiry into the death of a female college student here allegedly due to ragging. iRuchika Mohanty, a Plus 3 first-year student of History (Hons) at the n BJB Autonomous College , allegedly committed suicide on Saturday in the college hostel. However, she has not mentioned the names of the three senior girl students in the note. RFCA Convenor Tejeswar Parida told newspersons that the Chief Minister should personally intervene in deaths due to ragging in variouseducational institutions and announce zero tolerance for ragging. RFCA Co-Convenors Mir Ahmed Ali and Nalinikanta Nayak who were present have requested all MLAs of the state to raise the issue in the ongoing session of the Assembly. The state, Parida said, should enact ‘’The Odisha Prohibition of Ragging Act’’ along the lines of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh,Maharashtra, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir to check the rising incidents of ragging in the state. The RFCA demanded the state government constitute a state-level Anti-ragging Task Force and launch a 24-hour anti-ragging helpline in the Human Rights Protection Cell. Parida demanded the state government implement the Supreme Court guidelines in 2001, Dr. R K Raghavan Committee recommendations and the Supreme Court judgement on ragging in Educational institutions are not admitting ragging in their institutions and suppressing it. The quantum of punishment in a ragging case is so light that it has failed to check the menace, Parida said. The educational institutions, he said, are not taking the ragging seriously. Despite proof of ragging, the murder of two students in Bhimbhoi Medical college in Bolangir was projected as suicide, he alleged.
