Security forces on Saturday shot dead a local militant commander of Laskhar-e-Toiba in a gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said. The battle in village Sirhama erupted during a cordon and a search operation. “Acting on specific information, police and Rashtriya Rifles proceeded towards the suspected spot when the hidden terrorists fired indiscriminately, which was retaliated, leading to an encounter,” a police spokesman said. The slain man was identified as LeT commander Nisar Ahmad Dar alias Musaib of Kulgam. He was involved in several killing of civilians and migrant labourers besides grenade attacks on security forces, the police said. Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar termed the elimination of Dar a big success. The second anti-militancy operation in south Kashmir’s Kulgam was called off on Saturday afternoon after militants escaped from the area.
