Dushanbe/New Delhi : External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian on the sidelines of the SCO meet and discussed strengthening bilateral relations and working together on regional challenges.
In a tweet, the EAM posted: “ Glad to meet Iranian FM @Amirabdolahian on the sidelines of the SCO meet in Dushanbe.
“Discussed strengthening our bilateral relations and working together on regional challenges.”
The meeting in the Tajikistan capital comes over a fortnight after the two spoke on the phone when the EAM had made a congratulatory call to Abdollahian on his appointment as the new Iranian Foreign Minister.
In the congratulatory call, the EAM had agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation, and also appreciated Tehran’s help in the repatriation flights from Afghanistan.
Some of the Indian evacuation flights from Kabul, including the first one bringing back the Indian ambassador and embassy staff on August 16 following the takeover of Kabul by the Taliban, had flown over Iranian air space.
During the telephone call, the Iranian foreign minister had called for “speeding up the Chabahar port project” and also called for the formation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan “made up of all ethnic groups”.
