Irate drivers/helpers halt port operations protesting From Page- 1 over killing of their 2 colleague in Paradip

Paradip, : Two drivers were killed inside Paradip Port prohibited area while repairing their broken down Hyva dumpers late last Saturday night when an uncontrolled iron ore laden truck moving on great speed hit the dumpers from behind killing both the drivers on spot. The deceased drivers were Ratnakar Swain (46) of Astaranga area and Chandan
Jena (33) of Sandhakuda slum area. Tension gripped among the intraport drivers and helpers working in the restricted area after the incident. On Sunday morning, the workers held demonstration and blocked all the gates through which workers and vehicles move into Port to their work places demanding compensations to the deceased families and employ one of their family members in port for survival. They also demanded immediate ambulance service system and proper traffic management in the prohibited area which they cited as reasons for the loss of lives. They also complained that the driver who made the accident was heavily drunk. The port operations were affected as the gates were closed for about 8 hours from 6 AM to 2 PM on Sunday. However, Paradip Additional Superintendent of Police Smruti Ranjan Kar, Model Police Station IIC Kabuli Barik and the police force reached the spot and convinced the aggrieved people. Subsequently, Paradip Additional District Magistrate Niranjan Behera finally brought the agitation under control. Finally, a decision was taken to provide compensation of Rs. 10 lakh to each affected family by Paradip Port, Rs. 5 lakh 20 thousand by Liberty Marine Stevedores Company and Rs. 2 lakh 20 thousand by Dumper Association, informed Additional District Magistrate Shri Behera.
