Emergency : June 25 ‘black day’ for Indian democracy : Chugh

Hyderabad, June 25 (Dumanimail) BJP National General Secretary and party incharge of Telangana, Tarun Chugh on Saturday said that June 25 was the ‘black day’ for the Indian democracy as the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had suspended all human rights and had put lakhs of people behind the bars by imposing emergency.
Addressing the BJP workers here, Chugh said for almost 21 months an atmosphere of terror and fear prevailed in the country where nobody could say anything against the government.
The most gruesome attack was done on the media as more than 327 journalists were imprisoned under Maintenance of Interanal Security Act (MISA) and more than 3,000 newspapers were shut down, he said while complete censorship was imposed in the country and as many as seven foreign journalists were also expelled from the count.
A large number of newspapers were starved due to the ban on advertisements on them, Chugh said.
The attack was also equally fierce on the film industry where many artists had to pay heavy price for not toeing the line of the government, he added.
