Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has held an emergency meeting with top government officials and directed them to make all preparations in advance with deployment of eight NDRF teams in the coas coastal district to face any eventuality in view of cyclone Jawad threats.
Miking has been started since Wednesday in the coastal districts alerting the people with warning to the fishing community and tourists not to venture near the Bay of Bengal.
Ms Banerjee, soon after returning from Mumbai, had held an emergency meeting at Nabanna last evening with top civil and police officials including chief secretary HK Diwedy and the DGP and directed full preparedness to face any eventuality.
The deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours, the Indian Meteorological Department announced at 9 am on Friday morning.
The storm system has been designated Cyclone Jawad. The cyclone is likely to cause heavy rainfall and high-speed winds in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal.
The IMD informed Jawad will reach the north Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coast by Saturday morning. The governments of Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh have begun taking contingency measures.
In West Bengal, Jawad is expected to cause heavy rainfall until Sunday in districts such as North 24-Parganas, Bankura, Jhargram and Howrah as well as in parts of Purulia, Hooghly, Nadia, Birbhum, Murshidabad, East Burdwan, West Burdwan and Malda.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday reviewed the situation and held talks with several district magistrates, conveying her concern and directing authorities to prevent the loss of property and human life by ensuring best practices.
Meanwhile, in a tweet state governor Jagdeep Dhankhar said,” Gratifying to note@IndiaCoastGuard has initiated the pre-impetive and preventive action for safety of life and property at sea. ICG Ships & Aircraft have been tasked specifically for relaying weather warning to mariners & urging fishing boats at sea to return harbour.”
