Delhi : Democracy is not just an idea but a feeling embedded in Indian consciousness, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said on Wednesday wishing people on international Day of Democracy.
‘Democracy is not just an idea for us, it is a feeling embedded in our consciousness. From time immemorial, democratic values ​​were nurtured in India. We are proud that today India is the most functioning democracy in the world,” Birla said in a tweet wishing citizens on International Day of Democracy.
“Let us strengthen our faith in the democratic system,” he said.
Birla will on Wednesday also chair the 81st All India Presiding Officers’ Conference (AIPOC).
The conference will discuss the ‘Role of Legislature in fostering effective and meaningful democracy.’
In 2007 the United Nations General Assembly resolved to observe 15 September as the International Day of Democracy—with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy.
