Centre aims at Rs 1L cr revenue from fish export by ’24-25: Minister

Kochi : The Centre is aiming to increase the value of fish exports to Rs 1 lakh crore by 2024-25, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, L. Murugan said after vising the Fishing Harbour at Thoppumpady here on Monday.

Murugan said five fishing harbours in the country, including Kochi, Chennai, Visakhapatnam and Paradeep will be upgraded to international standards.

As part of this, Ice plants and processing facilities will be arranged at the harbour itself..Through the modernization of ports, fishermen will be able to get better prices for their products, he said.

A detailed project report of the Seaweed Processing Centre to be set up in the Special Economic Zone in Tamil Nadu is being prepared. It will ensure employment opportunities and economic empowerment for women in fisheries sector, he added.

The Minister was accompanied by Hibi Eden, Ernakulam MP and M. Beena, chairperson, Kochi Port Trust.
