New Delhi: The Center bowed to the state’s demands. The fitment committee will study the GST exemption from kendu leaf. The Union Finance Minister gave the promise after the thunder of the state government. Chief Minister
Naveen Patnaik has repeatedly raised his voice to give the rights of kendu leaf pluckers, binder and workers. He has written multiple letters to protect the lives of 8 lakh tribal women and pluckers. But the center was ignoring it.
The Center has softened after heated discussions in the 48th GST Council meeting today. Bidi made from kendu leaf is subject to 28% GST. The center gets 14 percent of the revenue. Then why will GST be levied on kendu leaf ?
Neither the state nor the center will lose anything if the kendu leaf is fully exempted from GST. The Center bowed its head in front of Odisha’s strong argument. Telangana has joined forces with Odisha. The Chief Minister had last written a letter to the Union Finance Minister on 25th of last month about 18 percent GST exemption on small scale
products. The Chief Minister has announced a special package for pluckers and seasonal workers while the Centre’s discretion is at its peak. The GST compensation law to the states has expired in June of this financial year. Punjab, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh demanded an extension of the compensation period.
