Bhubaneswar : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a
series of orange and yellow warnings for Odisha as a lowpressure system begins to form
over the Bay of Bengal, triggering intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across the state over the next five days. According to the IMD, the lowpressure area is developing under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the central Bay of Bengal. It is expected to become more marked within 48 hours, significantly intensifying rainfall activity across coastal and interior Odisha. In the next 24 hours, districts such as Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur are likely to experience heavy rain and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph. A yellow warning has been issued for these districts. From August 13 to 14, orange warnings have been issued for Koraput and Malkangiri, while yellow warnings cover Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Balangir, and Nuapada. Similar alerts continue through August 15 and 16, with Malkangiri and Koraput remaining under orange warning and surrounding districts under yellow alert. Thunderstorm activity with lightning and gusty winds is also expected in districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kandhamal, and Rayagada. The IMD has also cautioned fishermen not to venturing into the sea from August 13 to 16 due to squally weather and rough sea conditions along and off the Odisha coast, as well as in the West Central and North Bay of Bengal. Officials have been placed on alert, and residents are advised to stay informed through official weather updates and take necessary precautions, especially in flood-prone and low-lying areas.
