Coromandel Collides with Goods Train: Several Dead

Coromandel Express has suffered a horrific accident near Bahanga station in Balasore this evening. A large number of passengers are feared to have been killed as five coaches of the Coromandel Express overturned due to a head-on collision with a goods train. Preparations have been started by the local administration to provide rescue and immediate medical treatment to the passengers, while an emergency control room number has been issued by the state government. Today the train was going from Salimar to Chennai. At this time, at around 7:20 in the afternoon, it climbed on top of a freight train standing near Bahanga station. As a result, 8 coaches of the train fell down from the rail. Local people along with police and fire services personnel launched rescue operations. The injured are being shifted to the hospital. The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has directed the Collector to reach the spot immediately and supervise the rescue operation. Medical College and all hospitals in and around Balasore and also SCBMCH in Cuttack have been kept on alert, informed Development Commissioner In the meanwhile, injured passengers have been rushed to hospitals at Bahanaga and Khantapara and Balasore headquarters town and doctors' teams from FM Medical College sent to the spot.
