Supreme Court: Hearing on former police commissioner Param Bir Singh today

New Delhi : The Supreme Court will on Monday hear the plea of ​​suspended former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh, who has been absconding for several months on charges of extortion.

A bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice MM Sundaresh had on November 18, in the last hearing, refused to grant relief from arrest to Param Bir Singh.

The Bombay High Court had on September 16 dismissed the petition of this 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer.

On Wednesday, after a court in Mumbai declared the former police commissioner a fugitive, he had then approached the Supreme Court on the basis of power of attorney on his behalf.

After accusing the then Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh of illegally demanding Rs 100 crore, IPS Singh has been missing for several months, embroiled in a series of controversies and serious allegations of illegal extortion from a hotelier.

The Crime Branch of Mumbai Police had on August 20 registered an FIR against the former police commissioner and others on the basis of allegations of illegally demanding crores of rupees from a restaurant and bar owner. Apart from suspended Mumbai Police Inspector Sachin Waje, five others are facing serious allegations of extortion in this case.

Apart from Sachin, the police had arrested other accused- Sumit, Alpesh in this case, but Param Bir is absconding. The former police commissioner is missing after the FIR was registered.

On Wednesday, Mumbai’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sudhir Bhajipal declared the suspended former police commissioner a fugitive on the demand of the crime branch.

After the disappearance of Maharashtra’s second most senior IPS officer, there is also speculation that he may have fled abroad.

A bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul refusing to grant relief on 18 November, asked his lawyer whether the petitioner Param Bir was in India or elsewhere in the world? The bench will not hear his plea until the court finds out and does not appear.

The counsel for former police commissioner Singh had assured a reply in this regard from the bench on November 22. Following this, the top court had ordered to list the hearing for today.
