Cooch Behar, Apr 8 (UNI) As many as 16 suspects, in the attack of BJP president (Bengal) Dilip Ghosh, was arrested, elsewhere TMC’s outgoing MLA Amal Acharya has quit his party and joined the opposition consolidating the winning possibility of the saffron brigade in poll-bound North Bengal.
Mr Ghosh, who was returning in a car after electioneering for the 4th phase poll was attacked at Sitalkuchi in Cooch Behar on Wednesday afternoon when the miscreants hurled stones and arsenals smashing the windscreens of his vehicle. The miscreants also hit the vehicle with sticks, bamboo and stones when the politician was inside his vehicle, he was however unhurt as his security men chased the attackers.
The local police in day-night raid after the attack so far arrested 16 suspects from the locality.
The BJP has called a protest demonstration in all the police stations across the state today to condemn the attempt on the life of Ghosh. Mr Ghosh said the violence would stop only on May 2, when the results would be out for 294 seats of the state assembly.
Meanwhile, a rift appeared in the fort of the TMC at Itahar in Dinajpur where sitting MLA and TMC district chairman Amal Achariya quit the party then joined the BJP in presence of central minister Deboshree Chowdhury.
The two-time MLA Amal Achariya was dropped by the TMC into his home seat and gave ticket to Mosharaf Hossain.
TMC North Dinajpur president Kanaiyalal Agarwal said the going of Amal Acharya would not affect the party in the elections, to be in next 10 days.
