Singapore Open: Arjun-Dhruv pair, Saina enter QF

Kallang (Singapore), July 14 (Dumanimail) India’s young men’s doubles pair of M R Arjun and Dhruv Kapila and experienced shuttler Saina Nehwal paved their way to the quarterfinals of Singapore pen Super 500 tournament here on Thursday.

Arjun and Dhruv staged an upset in the round-16 as the duo defeated six-seeded Malaysian pair of Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin 18-21, 22-20, 21-18. While Saina got better of World No. 9 He Bing Jiao of China 21-19, 11-21, 21-17 to enter the last-eight.

The Indian men’s duo will be up against experienced Indonesian pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendar Setiawan while Saina will take on Aya Ohori of Japan for a place in semifinals.

Ashmita Chaliha, who registered comprehensive win over seventh seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan on Wednesday, crashed out after losing 9-21, 13-21 to Han Yue of China in the second round.

Women’s doubles combination of Pooja Dandu Arathi Sara lost 12-21, 6-21 to Chinese duo of Du Yue and Li Wen Mei.

Mixed pair of Nithin V and Poorvisha Ram, however, suffered 14-21,13-21 loss at the hands of sixth seed German pair of Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Lohau.

Earlier, HS Prannoy and ace shuttler P V Sindhu sealed their quarterfinals berths of the Super 500 tournament after come from behind win in their respective round-of-16 matches.
