Shreyas Iyer becomes 16th Indian batsman to score ton on Test debut

Kanpur : There would be no other legend of the game as proud as Sunil Gavaskar on Day 2 of the first Test against New Zealand at Green Park Stadium as he saw Shreyas Iyer score a century on debut.

Gavaskar, who has 34 Test hundreds to his name, had handed over the India cap to the 26-year-old Iyer ahead of start of Day 1. The proud Mumbaikar became the 16th Indian batsman to score a century on debut.

Opener Prithvi Shaw was the last Indian to achieve this feat and also the youngest in the country.

Lala Amarnath was the first Indian batsman to score a ton on debut and his eldest son Surinder Amarnath too achieved the same milestone.

Gundappa Vishwanath, Mohammad Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan are some of the other big names who scored a century on debut.

Shreyas had to wait for more than four years to make his Test debut, though he had made his ODI and T20 debut in 2017. The Mumbaikar has scored 4592 runs at an average of 52.18 with 12 centuries and 23 fifties in domestic cricket.

Shreyas had led Delhi Capitals to the final of IPL 2020.
