Tolo News reported that several rockets hit Kabul city on Monday morning. The rockets were fired from a car in Khair Khana area towards Kabul airport.
Monday’s incident comes a day after the US military conducted an airstrike in a crowded Kabul neighbourhood northwest of the airport against a vehicle carrying at least one suicide bomber who intended to target Kabul’s international airport on Sunday.
The strike set off “significant secondary explosions”, which indicated a “substantial amount of explosive material” inside the vehicle, Capt Bill Urban, spokesman for US Central Command, said in a statement.
The US military said it acted to intervene and prevent another event like the suicide bombing on Thursday that killed nearly 200 people, including 13 US service members.
The drone strike on Sunday is believed to have killed at least four people.
Separately, a rocket struck a house in the Khawja Bughra area in Kabul’s 11th security district on Sunday, killing two people.
US President Joe Biden had warned on Saturday that another terrorist attack on Kabul’s airport is “highly likely in the next 24-36 hours”.
The incidents come as the US is hours away from a complete withdrawal of its forces and personnel from Afghanistan on August 31 after 20 years of engagement with the country.
