Dharmapuri : Passengers of the Kannur-Yesvantpur express had a providential escape after seven coaches of the train derailed when boulders fell on the track due to landslide triggered by heavy rains between Thoppur and Sivadi sections on the Bengaluru-Salem division early on Friday morning.
Railway and police sources said all the 2,300-odd passengers in the train were safe and none was hurt in the mishap.
Two air conditioned and five sleeper coaches derailed after boulders from the rocky hills fell on the moving train when it approached Muthampatty around 3.50 a.m.
Bengaluru Divisional Railway Manager Shya Singh and other senior officials from Salem visited the spot along with an accident relief train and medical equipment van.
The seven coaches in the rear, which were not affected by the derailment, along with the passengers were transported towards Salem and Bengaluru via Tirupattur route by a special train, while the remaining three coaches were moved to Dharmapuri.
The railways also organised special buses at Thoppur for the benefit of the passengers.
A help desk has been opened at Dharmapuri, Salem and Hosur stations.
