Berhampur : A pall of gloom has descended upon Bangarada village under Digapahandi block in Odisha’s Ganjam district, as the mortal remains of six Odia labourers arrived in the village on Monday following a tragic accident in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. The migrant workers had been employed in a stone quarry where a
blasting operation took a fatal turn on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased were part of a team engaged in high-risk excavation and stone blasting work in a remote area of Andhra Pradesh. Preliminary reports indicate that inadequate safety precautions may have contributed to the incident. The sudden explosion not only claimed six lives but also injured several others, who are currently receiving treatment at different hospitals.
Upon the arrival of the bodies, the entire village broke into tears. Mournful wails echoed through Bangarada as grieving families and neighbors gathered to offer final respects. Local administrative officials, including the Tehsildar and police personnel, were present to oversee the arrangements and assist the bereaved families. As Odisha mourns the loss of its sons, questions are being raised about the working conditions and oversight in such hazardous industries that depend heavily on migrant labourers. Meanwhile, an inquiry has been launched to investigate the circumstances surrounding the mishap,
with demands rising for stricter enforcement of labour safety regulations.
