Kanyakumari : Heavy rains threw normal life out of gear and train and road services were disrupted between Nagercoil and Thiruvananthapuram in most parts of this district on Saturday.
Official sources said the continuous heavy downpour has left several residential localities and low-lying areas waterlogged, besides triggering landslides between Kuzhithurai and Eraniel railway stations, while the railway tracks between Nagercoil-Kanyakumari section was marooned.
Several acres of agriculture lands were submerged in flood waters.
According to preliminary reports, paddy and coconut cultivated in about 3,240 acres and 123 acres of horticulture crops like banana, tapioca and cucumber were inundated in flood waters.
District Collector M.Arvind said 350 people were evacuated from low lying areas and accommodated in 13 relief centres.
Monitoring Officer for Kanyakumari district B.Jothi Nirmala visited the affected areas and assessed the damages.
Kanyakumari district recorded an average rainfall of 100.48 mm in 24 hours till 0800 hours, this morning.
The India Meteorological Department had predicted that thunderstorms with moderate rains were likely to occur at one or two places in Kanyakumari and the neighbouring Tirunelveli districts for the next two days.
Heavy rains in the Western Ghats have resulted in flooding of all three main waterfalls, Main falls, Five falls and Old Courtallam at the famous Courtallam picnic spot, prompting the authorities to prevent tourists from bathing in the falls.
