Depression Over The Bay Jalaka River flowing above danger mark

Bhubaneswar: Due to the impact of the Depression over Bay of Bengal, 10 districts of the State will witness very heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours. The IMD has issued an orange warning for Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Bolangir, Bargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, and Jajpur in this regard. Similarly, a yellow warning (heavy rainfall – 7 to 11 cms) has been issued for Balasore, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sambalpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Rayagada, Sonepur, Deogarh, Boudh, Malkangiri and Koraput districts. “Yesterday’s Well Marked Low Pressure Area over Depression Over The Bay Jalaka River flowing above danger mark Westcentral & adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts moved west northwestwards and concentrated into a Depression today morning over south coastal Odisha and neighbourhood, which further moved west northwestwards with a speed of 25 kmph during past 3 hours and lay centered at 8:30 am on Sunday,” the IMD bulletin read. The system lies about 80 km east-southeast of Bhawanipatna (Odisha), 110 km west-northwest of Gopalpur (Odisha), 210 km east-northeast of Jagdalpur (Chhattisgarh) and 260 km eastsoutheast of Kanker (Chhattisgarh), at 1 pm today. It is likely to move west-northwestwards across south Odisha and south Chhattisgarh during next 24 hours and weaken gradually, the IMD stated. Due to the incessant rain following the low pressure, the water level at Jalaka River is flowing above the danger mark at Mathani village under Basta block of Ba l a sor e district in Odisha. According to reports, the danger mark of Jalaka River at Mathani is 5.50 metre, however 5.96 metre of water level was recorded by 12 PM today.
Likewise, the water level of different water bodies in Mayurbhanj district is increasing due to the incessant rain for the last couple of days. Reportedly, the embankments of the rivers crossing the district have become weak in several places causing fear of flood among the people living in the river bank areas. Besides, there is also a possibility of destruction of paddy sidling in case it floods.
