Mumbai: Cricket andbaseball/softball will return to theOlympic Games in Los Angelesin 2028, after the 141st
International OlympicCommittee (IOC) Sessionapproved the proposal here onMonday. Flag football, lacrosse
and squash will also feature atLos Angeles 2028 as additionalsports. The five sports werevoted in as a single package, withtwo out of around 90 IOCmembers at the session votingagainst the proposal. Theseadditional sports were proposedby the LA28 OrganizingCommittee, for the 2028 editiononly, and were reviewed by theIOC’s Olympic ProgramCommission before being putforward to the IOC executiveboard. For baseball/softball,cricket and lacrosse, it would bea return to the Olympic Games,while flag football and squashwould be making their Olympicdebuts in Los Angeles. Baseballand softball have been part of theprogram at several editions of theOlympic Games, most recently at Tokyo 2020. LA28 will markthe first time for cricket tofeature at an Olympic Gamessince Paris 1900, while it will belacrosse’s third appearance at theOlympic Games, after St. Louis1904 and London 1908.
