Bhubaneswar: The government has issued various guidelines for the safety of school children from time to time. The school buses they travel are checked for fitness and also insurance and driver’s licenses. While the government is concerned about children going to school safely and returning home after school, due to the negligence and indifference of some school authorities, students lose their valuable lives.
This is evident from the death of two students in a road accident on Saturday. With many dreams, parents send their children in the care of school authorities, but their reckless behavior often leads to danger.
Digant Kumar Das, 18, a 10th class student of DAV School in Chandrasekharpur, and Ayesha, a student of the same class , were killed in an accident. Many are now questioning who is responsible for the accident . The school hours are from 9.45 am to 3.30pm, while the accident occurred at 2 pm. So the question is, how did they get out during school hours? They were dressed in uniform as found at the site of the accident, and are sure to be out of school during school hours . If they came out, did they apply for a leave of absence from the school? If the students were on leave without an application, did the school authorities inform the parents. Has all this been done by the school?
This is not a new incident for Chandrasekharpur DAV School. There have been a number of incidents in the past where students have been sexually abused on the roof or in the classroom after the class has ended and also someone falling from the school building. However, school authorities are not concerned about such sad incidents. Instead of trying to take corrective action, they wallow in their sadness and thus, experience more failure.
Digant Kumar Das, 18 and Ayesha were riding on a bike in a lonely road near Chandka-Pathargadia Shiva Mandir at around 2 pm on Saturday. Diganta died on the spot, and Ayesha was rushed to a local hospital where she died while undergoing treatment.
The incident has been taken seriously by the ‘Dumani Khabar’, ‘Dumani Mail’ and ‘Dumani TV’. As a responsible media house, we can’t close our eyes to such neglect.
Such reckless attitude of the school authorities is not acceptable at all. All intellectuals, parents, organizations, administrations and the general public should be vigilant so as not to lose valuable lives of students due to such indifferent and negligent policies. People have demanded a proper investigation into the Pathargadia accident and strict action against the individuals and institutions responsible for it.
