SOP Issued for Vehicles Going to Picnic Spots

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Government today issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) because of the increased deaths due to road accidents in the State. The SOP contains guidelines for vehicle owners, collaborating agencies, local police, and regional transport officers (RTOs). During winter, picnic spots and pilgrim places often attract increased traffic as people move outdoors for recreational activities. The influx of visitors leads to congested roads, parking challenges, and a higher risk of accidents. “Furthermore, individuals engaged in recreational activities near picnic spots may be less attentive to traffic rules or may engage in activities that distract them from their surroundings, contributing to a higher likelihood of accidents,” the Transport Department SOP stated. Hence, drivers and pedestrians must remain mindful of their surroundings, adhere to the safety guidelines, and exercise caution to prevent accidents in recreational areas such as picnic spots and pilgrim places. Worth mentioning, Odisha reported 5,467 deaths due to 11,663 road accidents in 2022 as against 5,081 deaths due to 10,983 accidents in the year 2021. From November to February, the winter season and picnic activities contribute to an increase in road accidents and fatalities. The Department aims to achieve a significant reduction in road accident-related casualties through rigorous enforcement measures, especially at picnic spots and pilgrim places across the State.
