Private Hospitals Exploit Patients, Make Them Paupers

Bhubaneswar: The state government is spending crores of rupees along with implementing many s cheme s to provide healthcare at the fingertips of the people. A lion’s share of the money has also been sanctioned in the budget for this. Both public and private hospitals are supposed to provide quality healthcare to the people as per the government’s policy. But some Bhubaneswar- based private hospitals are ignoring the government’s directives and exploiting poor patients which have become a talking point. The government on its part provides land at cheaper r a t e s a n d o t h e r infr a struc tur e a t an affordable cost to build private hospitals. But the p r i v a t e h o s p i t a l a u t h o ri t i e s a r e n o t Private Hospitals Exploit Patients, Make Them Paupers providing proper treatment to the patients due to their profit-seeking motives. One such incident has taken place in a private hospital in the capital. In Utkal Hospital, a patient was admitted expecting better quality of treatment. But the cure for the patient was just not seen. Even after spending 20 lakh rupees, the patient could not recover from his ailment. Instead, he suffered further damage to the body. Not only this, the family members have complained that they were harassed by a n amb u l a n c e wh il e r e turning home . The question arises, if a poor person spends lakhs of money and instead of getting well, returns home with more diseases, who is responsible for it? Private hospitals have been directly ignoring the
government guidelines openly.No action is visible nor is any administrative officer investigating the hospital’s nefarious activities. The government brought health care under 5-T to provide quality treatment to the people, but many private hospitals are exploiting patients and not providing proper treatment. People have urged the 5-T Secretary to look into this kind of exploitation by private hospitals and take strict action.
