Washington : Local media sources have claimed that US President Joe Biden during a telephonic interaction with Turkish President Recep on Friday said that he would be recognizing the massacre of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1917 as a genocide.
A report by Bloomberg  cited sources familiar with the matter saying that the US President is likely to use the word “genocide” in a statement on Saturday(April 24). April 24 is observed as Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, the day is observed annually to commemorate the victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915.
If Biden does use the term ‘genocide’, he would be the first US president in 40 years to do so, this would be in accordance with his campaign promise.
The Turkish government has already warned Biden that recognizing the events as genocide would harm US-Turkish relations.
