New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid rich tributes to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his birth anniversary, saying his lofty ideals motivate millions across the nation.
Taking to twitter, Mr Modi wrote: “I bow to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his Jayanti. His lofty ideals motivate millions across our nation. Dr. Mookerjee devoted his life towards India’s unity and progress. He also distinguished himself as a remarkable scholar and intellectual.”
Mookerjee was a politician, barrister and academician, who served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet.
He then quit the Congress and founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, which later evolved into Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
He was born on July 6, 1901, in Kolkata, West Bengal. In 1953, he went to Kashmir where he was arrested and later died under detention on June 23, 1953.
