Odisha reports 8735 nCov cases, record 37 deaths in single day

Bhubaneswar : Odisha reported 8735 covid positive cases and a record 37 deaths in the past 24 hours pushing the covid tally in the state to 7,73,732 and 2791 fatalities.

For the six days consecutively, the daily infection has been witnessing below 10 k in the state while since May 23 over 30 people have been succumbing to the virus daily.

Health and Family Welfare department sources said out of 8735 fresh cases reported from 30 districts in the state 4892 were registered from the quarantine centres and 3843 as local contact cases.

Khordha district registered the highest number of 1222 cases followed by Cuttack ( 673), Balasore( 566), Jajpur ( 507), Dhenkanal ( 503), Puri (467) and Angul (456).

Sources said in the past 24 hours 37 covid patients, the highest so far in May, succumbed to the virus from as many as 15 districts.

Angul district reported a maximum number of five deaths followed by four each in Kalahandi and Cuttack, three each in Jharsuguda,Khordha, Nabarangpur and Sundargarh districts.

Two each died in four other districts while one each also succumbed to the virus in four districts.

Since May 23, the daily recovery cases in the state continue to surpass the daily covid caseload. On May 31 last 10,405 covid patients were cured in the state pushing the total recoveries to 6,80,932.

The active cases which had been surpassing over a lakh since May 12 last, have started declining further in the last four days and now stands at 89,956.

Khordha district which has recorded the highest covid infection and covid toll in the state also continued to remain top in active cases too. The district has 12689 active cases followed by Cuttack ( 8433), Angul (5415) and Sundargarh ( 5158).

In May alone the state has reported 3,19,125 covid positive cases and 737 deaths while 2,94,682 covid patients have been cured during the month.

Official sources said till May 31 as many as 77,52,204 including 7,25,205 in the age group of 18 -44 years have been vaccinated against the coronavirus in the state.
