New Delhi: A petition was filed today in the Supreme Court seeking a directive to stop selling of any properties of Shree Jagannatha of Shree Jagannatha Temple in Puri. Jan Swabhiman Welfare Society’s Counsel Shashank Shankar Jha moved the apex court seeking a directive to the Cabinet Secretary of Ministry of Home Affairs, Chief Secretary of the Odisha government and Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration toimmediately stop settling and selling of any of the properties of Lord Jagannatha.
The plea sought the SC’s intervention to direct the parties to ensure any temporary or permanent settlement that has happened in properties of Lord Jagannatha comprise only of people who adhere to the religion that worship the Lord.
Also, the petition prayed for the SC’s intervention to dissolve the current temple management and create a judicial committee in interim to oversee creating of an administrative mechanism for the temple in sync with Dharmik traditions of the Jagannatha Dham and the role of government is restricted to only facilitation of such a mechanism.
The plea further requested for a judicial commission headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court to investigate the matter.
