Bhubaneswar : Odisha reported 3554 new covid cases and a record 47 deaths in the past 24 hours pushing the total covid tally in the state to 8,97,062 with 3848 fatalities.
Health and Family Welfare department sources said out of 68695 tests conducted in the state in the past 24 hours, about 5.17 per cent tested positive.
They included 2028 from various quarantine centres and 1526 as local contact cases from all the 30 districts in the state.
During the period a record 47 covid patients from 18 districts succumbed to the virus. This was the second occasion such a large number of covid patients died on a single day in the state. Earlier, on June 11 last also 47 covid patients succumbed to the virus.
Health and Family Welfare department sources said Khordha district accounted for a maximum of nine deaths taking the toll tally in the district to a record high of 615 deaths so far.
Bargarh, Cuttack and Nayagarh districts have reported five deaths each while three each died in Ganjam, Puri and Sundargarh district. Two each also succumbed to the virus in Angul, Jajpur and Kendrapara districts while one each died in eight districts.
Next to Khordha district, tribal-dominated Sundargarh district has reported 342 deaths so far while the virus has claimed 325 lives in Ganjam district followed by Cuttack ( 267) and Puri ( 218 ).
Out of 3554 daily caseloads reported in the state in the past 24 hours, Khirdha district has the highest number of651 cases followed by Cuttack ( 501), Balasore( 271), Jajpur ( 256) and Puri (233).
The active cases in the state have slightly declined to 33,019 today from 33,156 reported the previous day. As many as 20 districts have so far registered less than 1000 active cases while six districts have active cases above 1000 but less than 2500.
Only four districts from coastal Odisha have reported active cases of more than 2500 with Khordha district registering the highest number of 5247 cases followed by Cuttack( 3739 ) and Jajpur ( 3129 ).
Sources said 3644 people were recovered from the disease on Friday taking the total recoveries in the state to 8,60,142.
Since May 23 last the daily recovery cases have outnumbered the daily caseload in the state.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday inaugurated healthcare facilities and laid the foundation for medical oxygen storage and generation plants at different hospitals across the state strengthening medical infrastructure to save precious lives from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr Patnaik also laid the foundation for Liquid Medical Oxygen (LMO) Storage Vessel Systems and Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) based oxygen generation plants at District Headquarter Hospitals in Bargarh, Ganjam, Jajpur, Kandhamal, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, Rayagada and Malkangiri.
The LMO and PSA plants have covered all the 30 districts in the state.
Meanwhile, Additional Chief Secretary( Health) PK Mohapatra in a letter to all the government-run medical colleges and CDMOs asked them to undertake the sample testing of the new PSA plants established across the state at NABL accredited labs.
