New Delhi, June 24 (Dumanimail) Droupadi Murmu, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the post of Indian President, filed her nomination papers on Friday in Parliament House here.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed her name. He was seconded by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Chief Ministers of BJP-led states including Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi Adityanath, Madhya Pradesh’s Shivraj Singh Chauhan as well as several women and tribal MPs and legislators were present in Parliament on the occasion.
Before filing the nomination papers, Murmu paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, Dr B R Ambedkar and Birsa Munda.
Murmu arrived in the national capital from her home state Odisha and met Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and BJP president J P Nadda on Thursday.
Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), Odisha Chief Minister and BJD President Naveen Patnaik and the YSR Congress led by Jagan Mohan Reddy also supported the candidature of Murmu.
Murmu has sought cooperation from everyone for her candidature.
Murmu will begin her campaign from June 25 to seek support from political parties to help her get elected as the President.
The BJP has appointed a 14-member team led by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to coordinate the electioneering process for the July 18 presidential election.
Born on June 20, 1958 in Baidaposi village of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, Murmu belongs to Santhal ethnic group. She graduated from the Ramadevi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar with a BA degree in 1979. She was a teacher before entering politics in 1997 as the councillor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat.
The opposition has fielded former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha against Murmu. Sinha, whose name was announced by senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, will file his nomination papers on June 27.
