Lalu Yadav gets bail in fodder scam case

Ranchi, Apr 17 (UNI) After spending more than three years behind the bars former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD Supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav will be soon out of the jail as on Friday in a major reprieve the Jharkhand High Court granted him bail in connection with Dumka Treasury Case of the multi crore fodder scam.

The court of Justice Apresh Kumar Singh granted the bail to Lalu Yadav. The court has instructed Lalu Yadav to furnish bail bond of Rs 1 lakh and pay a fine of Rs 10 lakh.

The court has said that as long as Lalu Yadav is out on bail he can not leave the country without the prior permission of the court. Further he should also not change his mobile number or address.

Lalu Yadav had earlier got bails in two cases of fodder scam related to Chaibasa Treasury and another one related to Deoghar Treasury. Hearing is still on in the Doranda Treasury Case of the fodder scam.

Lalu Yadav is currently admitted in AIIMS New Delhi where he is undergoing treatment for various health related ailments. He was airlifted from Ranchi to New Delhi on January 23, 2021.

Earlier hearing on the bail plea of Lalu Yadav was held on April 9, 2021 during which senior lawyer Kapil Sibal had presented the arguments on behalf of Lalu Yadav while on the other hand the CBI had demanded three days time to file a counter affidavit which was approved by the court.

The hearing in the case was earlier scheduled for April 16 however due to sanitisation work at the High Court it was extended to Saturday.

Kapil Sibal on Saturday once again urged the court to grant bail to Mr Yadav as he had completed half the tenure of imprisonemt awarded to him while the counsel CBI maintained that in case number RC 38A/96 which is related to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 3.13 crore from Dumka Treasury the special CBI court had awarded 7 years of imprisonment to Lalu Yadav under different sections of IPC while another 7 years were awarded under different sections of PC Act which means overall he was given an imprisonment of 14 years therefore he had not completed the half tenure and therefore his bail should be rejected.

However after hearing arguments of both the sides the court ended up granting bail to Lalu Yadav. Earlier Lalu Yadav had managed to secure bail in two cases related to Chaibasa Treasury and one related to Deoghar Treasury case.

Lalu Yadav was lodged at the Birsa Munda Jail in Hotwar since December 23, 2017, however over ill health for several months he was in the paying ward of RIMS for treatment but was airlifted to AIIMS New Delhi over chest pain and breathing difficulties on January 23, 2021.

However Lalu Yadav will have to wait another two-three days before coming out from jail as his bail order has been sent to the lower court which will provide the same to Birsa Munda Jail Ranchi. Subsequently the bail order will be sent to Tihar Jail Delhi as currently he has been undergoing treatment at AIIMS as an inmate of Tihar Jail.
