Delhi HC seeks response from AAP govt in plea seeking free transportation for migrant workers

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought the response of the Aam Admi Party-led Arvind Kejriwal government in a plea seeking free rail and bus transportation for all migrant workers and their families returning home.

A Division Bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jasmeet Singh also issued notice to the government to ensure amenities like cooked meals, dry ration, water, shelter, clothing, medication, etc to daily wagers and migrant labourers amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The bench listed the matter for further hearing on May 4.

The petitioner urged that nodal officers be appointed by the Delhi government for compulsory registration of daily wagers and migrant workers under the Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1979 and the Unorganized Sector Worker’s Social Security Act, 2008.

The plea also contended that nodal officers should also ensure that a website comprising full details on the distribution of food, shelter, and all necessary medication to these workers is made operational.
