Cyclone ‘Gulab’ : Landfall process to commence from 1800 hrs on Sunday evening : IMD

Hyderabad : The landfall process of Cyclonic Storm ‘Gulab’ (Pronounced as ‘Gul-Aab’), which lay centered at 1630 hours on Sunday, over Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal near Latitude 18.45°North and Longitude 84.9° East, about 85 km East-Northeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and 95 km South of Gopalpur.

Ministry of Earth Sciences, India Meteorological Department (IMD) in a bulletin a short while ago said it moved nearly westwards with a speed of 25 kmph during past three hours.

It is likely to move nearly westwards and cross North Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coasts between Kalingapatnam and Gopalpur, as a Cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 75-85 kmph gusting to 95 kmph by midnight of today.

Currently the Cyclone is being monitored by Doppler Weather Radar at Vishakhapatnam. Tidal wave of about 0.5 m height above the astronomical tide likely to inundate low lying areas of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram districts in AP and Ganjam district in Odisha during the time of landfall, the bulletin said.

After the landfall, the system is likely to maintain the cyclonic storm intensity with slight weakening of wind speed during the subsequent 6 hours over south Odisha & adjoining North Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

It is likely to move west-northwestwards across south Odisha & South Chhattisgarh and weaken gradually into a Depression during the subsequent 12 hours.

Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall (≥ 20 CM) at isolated places is very likely over South Odisha and North Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places is also likely over Telangana during the later part of the day.

On Monday, heavy to very heavy falls will occur at isolated places over Telangana, the bulletin added.
