Covid tally in Odisha surges to 4,79,752 with 8216 new cases, death toll rises to 2088 with 15 fresh fatalities

Bhubaneswar : Covid tally in Odisha today surged to 4,79,752 with the detection of 8216 new cases while the covid toll rose to 2088 with 15 more fatalities reported in the past 24 hours.

Health and Family Welfare department sources said 4684 new cases were reported from quarantine centres and 3532 local contact cases from 30 districts in the state in the past 24 hours.

The state also registered 15 covid deaths from seven districts in the past 24 hours taking the total covid toll to 2088.

A maximum of five covid patients under treatment in the Khordha district succumbed to the virus followed by three in Rayagada and two each in Kalahandi and Sundargarh. One death each reported from Puri, Cuttack and Subarnapur district.

Official sources said as many as eleven districts in the state reported over 300 new cases in the past 24 hours with Khordha registering the highest number of 1271 cases followed by Sundargarh ( 636),Cuttack (447), Sambalpur ( 385)and Bargarh ( 375 ).

So far 4,04,063 covid patients have been recovered in the state which included 6488 cured yesterday. The active cases in the state went up to 73,548 today.

Meanwhile, State Special Relief Commissioner Pradip Jena has appealed to the people to refrain from panic buying and overcrowding in the shops and markets ahead of the statewide 14days lockdown beginning from May 5.

Mr Jena clarified that all grocery shops, milk, fish and vegetable shops and other essential commodities would remain open from 6 AM to 12 PM from Monday to Friday during the lockdown. These shops, however, would be closed on Saturday and Sunday due to lockdown imposed by the government.

A release from Odisha Police headquarter said a total of 281 tankers/containers carrying 5125.412 MT medical oxygen have been escorted so far from Rourkela, Jajpur, Dhenkanal and Angul districts by Odisha Police to several needy states and many more are leaving today.
