COVID-19: India reports 81,466 new cases, 469 deaths in past one day

New Delhi, Apr 2 (UNI): India on Friday reported a massive spike of 81,466 new cases of COVID-19 during the past 24 hours, pushing the country caseload to 1,23,03,131, while the death toll mounted to 1,63,396 with 469 more fatalities.

According to the Union Health Ministry, the active cases rose by 30,641 to stand at 6,14,696. It is now exactly 5.0 per cent of the total caseload.

The past 24 hours saw 50,356 people recovering from the deadly virus, taking the total recovery count to 1,15,25,039, which is 93.68 per cent of the case tally. The fatality rate stood at 1.33 per cent.

Of the fresh fatalities, a whopping 249 were from Maharashtra, 58 from Punjab, 34 from Chhattisgarh, 19 from Tamil Nadu, 18 from Karnataka, 11 from Kerala and 9 each from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that a total of 24,59,12,587 samples have been tested so far for coronavirus. Out of this, 11,13,966 were tested in the past one day.

On the vaccination front, as many as 6,87,89,138 vaccine doses have been administered so far. The country has now embarked on its third vaccination drive that covers population above 45 years of age, irrespective of comorbidities.

The Health Ministry through different social media handles urged the people above 45 years to register themselves on CoWIN portal and get vaccinated.
